Elevated plasma phospholipase A2 and platelet-activating factor acetylhydrolase activity in colorectal cancer.
This clinical study reports that blood levels of the pro-inflammatory mediator platelet-activating factor (PAF) did not change in colorectal cancer patients. In contrast, plasma levels of two enzymatic activities, one implicated in PAF production (i.e. phospholipase A2) and one in PAF degradation (i.e. PAF acetylhydrolase activity) were significantly elevated.
متن کاملElevated Plasma Homocysteine Concentration in Opium-Addicted Individuals
Background: Although the triggering role of both opium use and elevated plasma homocysteine level for progressing atherosclerosis and, therefore, appearing coronary heart disease has been clearly determined, no study are available with respect to the relation between these to risk profiles. In the present study and for the first time, we hypothesized that the opium addiction can be potentially ...
متن کاملPlasma arginase activity is elevated in type 2 diabetic patients
Cardiovascular complications of diabetes are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality. Vascular endothelial dysfunction (VED) is strongly implicated in the pathogenesis of diabetic vascular complications. Impaired endothelial cell (EC) production of nitric oxide (NO) is a main characteristic of VED. In ECs, NO is produced by endothelial nitric oxide synthase enzyme (eNOS), by utilizing Largin...
متن کاملDoes Elevated Plasma Triglyceride Level Independently Predict Impaired Fasting Glucose?
OBJECTIVE Elevated plasma triglycerides (TGs) have been included in diabetes risk prediction models. This study examined whether elevated TGs predict risk for impaired fasting glucose (IFG). RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS This study used the baseline and longitudinal follow-up data from the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA). The analysis included non-Hispanic whites, African Americans...
متن کاملConversion from Platelet-Rich Plasma Platelet Production to Buffy Coat Platelet Component Production: Benefits and Limitations
Blood transfusion centers are under considerable pressure to produce platelet concentrates with high quality and safety due to the short shelf life of 3-5 days as well as possible bacterial and viral contaminations. For a variety of reasons, many Europeans have changed their methods of component production from whole blood using the North American standard platelet-rich plasma method to the buf...
